How it works

1. Activate Kumena's first ability by tapping another nontoken Merfolk you control.
2. Deeproot Pilgrimage triggers, creating a 1/1 Merfolk creature token.
3. Resolve the Kumena ability.
4. Activate Phyrexian Altar by sacrificing the Merfolk token.
5. When the Merfolk dies, Faces of the Past triggers, untapping all Merfolk.
6. Repeat.

This elegant loop sets up a perpetual motion machine fueled by your undersea folk, starting when you tap a nontoken Merfolk to activate Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca's unblockable ability. That tapping instantly sparks Deeproot Pilgrimage to materialize a fresh 1/1 Merfolk token, which you immediately feed to Phyrexian Altar to generate mana of any color. The token's demise triggers Faces of the Past, untapping all your Merfolk—including Kumena and your entire army—so you can repeat the entire cycle endlessly. This grants you an infinite supply of creature tokens, sacrifice triggers, and colored mana, which can easily be redirected into Kumena's other activated abilities to draw your entire deck and grow your Merfolk with infinite +1/+1 counters.
