How it works

1. Activate Kumena's first ability by tapping another nontoken Merfolk you control.
2. Deeproot Pilgrimage triggers, creating a 1/1 Merfolk creature token.
3. Resolve the Kumena ability.
4. Activate Altar of Dementia by sacrificing the Merfolk token.
5. When the Merfolk dies, Faces of the Past triggers, untapping all Merfolk.
6. Resolve the Altar of Dementia ability.
7. Repeat.

This clever loop transforms your Merfolk into a self-sustaining mill engine by turning every tap into fresh fodder. You start by using Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca to tap a nontoken Merfolk, which immediately satisfies Deeproot Pilgrimage to churn out a brand new 1/1 token. That fresh token is then fed directly to Altar of Dementia to mill an opponent, and the moment it hits the graveyard, Faces of the Past triggers to untap your entire underwater colony. Because Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca and your entire school are now untapped and ready to go again, you can repeat the process indefinitely to mill any opponent out of the game.
