How it works

1. Cast Mikaeus either from your hand or from the command zone by paying plus commander tax, if applicable.
2. Mikaeus enters the battlefield and dies as a state-based action due to having 0 toughness.
3. Norn's Choirmaster and Magnanimous Magistrate trigger.
4. Resolve the Norn's Choirmaster trigger, putting a reprieve counter on Magnanimous Magistrate.
5. Resolve the Magnanimous Magistrate trigger, removing a reprieve counter from it and returning Mikaeus from your graveyard to the battlefield.
6. Repeat

This clever loop turns Mikaeus, the Lunarch into a self-sacrificing engine by casting it with zero mana invested in X, causing it to instantly perish from having zero toughness and setting up a perpetual resurrection cycle. Each time Mikaeus dies, Magnanimous Magistrate swoops in to trigger its reprieve counters—replenishing them with the help of Norn's Choirmaster, which proliferates counters onto the Magistrate whenever your commander enters the battlefield. Because Mikaeus serves as your commander, Norn's Choirmaster triggers reliably on every single iteration, providing the exact counter fuel Magnanimous Magistrate needs to keep pulling Mikaeus back from the graveyard.
