How it works

1. Cast the artifact by paying 0.
2. Toph, Hardheaded Teacher triggers, earthbending Izzet Boilerworks.
3. Resolve the artifact spell.
4. Activate Trenching Steed by sacrificing Izzet Boilerworks.
5. When Izzet Boilerworks dies, Toph, Hardheaded Teach triggers, returning Izzet Boilerworks from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.
6. When Izzet Boilerworks enters, it triggers, returning the artifact cast in step 1 from the battlefield to your hand, as it's a land due to Toph, the First Metalbender.
7. Resolve the Trenching Steed ability
8. Repeat.

This clever loop turns zero-mana artifacts into a self-sustaining engine by taking advantage of Toph, the First Metalbender, which brilliantly reclassifies your nontoken artifacts as lands. With that foundation set, you can drop a zero-mana artifact to trigger Toph, Hardheaded Teacher, which earthbends Izzet Boilerworks into an animated land. Trenching Steed then steps in to sacrifice that very same Izzet Boilerworks, whose death triggers its own return to the battlefield via Toph's lingering earthbend safety net. When Izzet Boilerworks re-enters, its own trigger forces you to return a land to your hand—and since the zero-mana artifact is currently counted as a land by Toph, the First Metalbender, it bounces right back to your hand, ready to be cast all over again.
