How it works
- Activate Phyrexian Altar by sacrificing the persist creature.
- When the persist creature dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
- When the persist creature enters, Good-Fortune Unicorn triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on the persist creature.
- Repeat
This ingenious loop turns a persisting creature into a self-sustaining engine by exploiting the math of counters: whenever the creature returns from the graveyard, Good-Fortune Unicorn places a +1/+1 counter on it, which immediately neutralizes the -1/-1 counter from its persist ability so it can die again.
