How it works

1. Cast Ephemerate by paying , blinking Karmic Guide.
2. Karmic Guide enters the battlefield, triggering itself and Preston.
3. Resolve the Karmic Guide trigger, returning any creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield.
4. Activate Phyrexian Altar by sacrificing Karmic Guide, adding one mana of any color.
5. Resolve the Preston trigger from step 2, creating a token copy of Karmic Guide that is a 0/1 white Illusion.
6. The Karmic Guide token enters the battlefield, returning the nontoken Karmic Guide from your graveyard to the battlefield.
7. Repeat from step 2.

This clever loop begins with Ephemerate blinking Karmic Guide, whose entry triggers both its own graveyard-recursion ability and Preston, the Vanisher's illusion-making clause. Before Preston's trigger resolves, you sacrifice the original Karmic Guide to Phyrexian Altar to generate mana, feeding the engine. Then, Preston's delayed trigger resolves to create an Illusion token copy of Karmic Guide, which immediately triggers its own entry ability to bring the original Karmic Guide right back from the graveyard. Repeating this dance allows you to continuously recycle Karmic Guide while leveraging Phyrexian Altar and Preston, the Vanisher to fuel an endless supply of mana, tokens, and triggers.
