How it works

1. Activate Phyrexian Altar by sacrificing the persist creature.
2. When the persist creature dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. When the persist creature enters, Railway Brawler triggers, putting a number of +1/+1 counters on the persist creature.
4. Repeat

This ingenious loop relies on a persist creature's ability to cheat death, turning Phyrexian Altar into an engine that churns out infinite colored mana, sacrifices, and death triggers. The true alchemy of the combination, however, is unlocked by Railway Brawler: each time the creature returns, the Brawler's triggered ability steps in to shower it with +1/+1 counters equal to its power. Because these counters immediately cancel out the -1/+1 counter from persist through state-based actions, the creature is left completely fresh and ready to be sacrificed to the Altar all over again.
