How it works

1. Activate Phyrexian Altar by sacrificing the creature with persist, adding one mana of any color.
2. The persist ability triggers, returning that creature to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it, as well as a +1/+1 counter due to Gev.
3. The +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters on that creature are removed as a state-based action.
4. Repeat.

This cunning loop exploits the mechanical interaction between a creature with persist and Gev, Scaled Scorch, whose static ability ensures that any creature you control enters the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter if an opponent has lost life that turn. When you sacrifice that creature to Phyrexian Altar to generate colored mana, its persist ability triggers to return it to the battlefield, where Gev's buff immediately applies. State-based actions then cause the incoming +1/+1 counter and the creature's native -1/+1 counter to annihilate each other, leaving the creature completely clean and ready to be sacrificed to the Altar all over again.
