How it works

1. At the beginning of combat, Workshop Elders triggers, making Basalt Monolith a 0/0 artifact creature until end of turn and putting four +1/+1 counters on it.
2. Activate Basalt Monolith's first ability by tapping it, adding CCC.
3. Activate Basalt Monolith's last ability by paying 1, untapping it.
4. Repeat.

This ingenious loop relies on a clever transformation facilitated by Workshop Elders, which turns your otherwise docile Basalt Monolith into a 0/0 artifact creature while bolstering it with four +1/+1 counters so it can survive as a permanent. Once it is a creature, Training Grounds steps in to fundamentally alter the math of the engine by slashing the untap cost of Basalt Monolith down to just a single mana. Because tapping the artifact yields three colorless mana while the discounted untap activation costs only one, you are left with a net positive gain of two mana with every single iteration—allowing you to generate an endless reservoir of colorless energy.
