How it works

1. Activate Basalt Monolith's first ability by tapping it, adding 3.
2. Activate Basalt Monolith's last ability by paying 3, untapping it.
3. Mesmeric Orb triggers, causing you to mill a card.
4. Repeat.

This classic self-mill engine turns Basalt Monolith's self-contained mana loop into a recursive mill trigger thanks to Mesmeric Orb. Because Basalt Monolith's untap ability costs the exact same amount of mana that tapping it produces, you can pay {3} to untap it as many times as you want, completely mana-neutral. Every single time that untap happens, Mesmeric Orb's passive ability triggers to force you to mill a card, allowing you to cycle through your entire library at instant speed.
