How it works

1. Activate Thermopod by sacrificing the persist creature.
2. When the persist creature dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield without a -1/-1 counter on it due to Grumgully.
3. Repeat.

This clever loop relies on the brilliant interaction between a persist creature and Grumgully, the Generous, which neutralizes the creature's usual drawback by placing an additional +1/+1 counter on it each time it enters the battlefield. This counter immediately cancels out the -1/-1 counter that persist would normally leave behind, allowing the creature to die and recur indefinitely. To turn this endless cycle into a wellspring of resources, Thermopod steps in as the ultimate altar, letting you sacrifice the looping creature over and over to generate infinite red mana while fueling its own activation cost.
