How it works

1. Activate Thermopod by sacrificing Grazing Kelpie.
2. When Grazing Kelpie dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. Hardened Academic triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on Grazing Kelpie.
4. Repeat.

This cunning loop transforms the clever recursion of Grazing Kelpie and the sacrifice outlet of Thermopod into a self-sustaining engine of perpetual motion. Each time the Kelpie is sacrificed to generate red mana, its persist mechanic would normally doom it to stay down under the weight of a -1/-1 counter, but Hardened Academic brilliantly intervenes whenever a card leaves your graveyard by placing a +1/+1 counter to effortlessly neutralize it. Through this continuous cycle, the counters cancel each other out upon entry, letting you repeat the process indefinitely to fuel endless triggers and blazing-hot mana.
