How it works

1. Cast Vesuvan Shapeshifter by paying its mana cost. Choose to have it enter the battlefield as a copy of Rakdos Joins Up.
2. Put Vesuvan Shapeshifter into your graveyard due to the legend rule.
3. Vesuvan Shapeshifter's first ability and second ability trigger, along with Rakdos Joins Up's second ability.
4. Resolve Vesuvan Shapeshifter's second trigger and Rakdos Joins Up's trigger, dealing damage to target opponent.
5. Resolve Vesuvan Shapeshifter's first trigger, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it as a copy of Rakdos Joins Up.
6. Repeat from step 2.

This clever loop relies on the interaction between the legend rule and clone mechanics to continuously trigger damage. Because Opalescence transforms every other non-Aura enchantment into a creature with power and toughness equal to its mana value, any enchantment copy of Rakdos Joins Up becomes a legendary creature. When you cast Vesuvan Shapeshifter as a copy of Rakdos Joins Up, the legend rule immediately sends it to the graveyard, which triggers the original Rakdos Joins Up to deal damage equal to that creature's power to an opponent while simultaneously activating Vesuvan Shapeshifter's own resurrection ability to bring it right back to the battlefield.
