How it works

  1. Activate Atog by sacrificing Tatterkite
  2. When Tatterkite dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield without a -1/-1 counter on it due to its static effect.
  3. Resolve the Atog ability.
  4. Repeat.

This loop relies on the clever interplay between Atog, Tatterkite, and the back side of Eirdu, Carrier of Dawn // Isilu, Carrier of Twilight (transformed into Isilu). When Isilu grants your nontoken creatures persist, normally a creature returning from the graveyard would receive a -1/-1 counter, bringing the loop to a halt. However, Tatterkite possesses a vital static ability stating that it cannot have counters put on it, completely bypassing this restriction and allowing it to return to the battlefield unscathed every time Atog sacrifices it. This creates an endless cycle of sacrifices, entering-the-battlefield triggers, and leave-the-battlefield triggers while feeding Atog's appetite to make it infinitely large.
