How it works

1. Activate Goblin Bombardment by sacrificing Obstinate Gargoyle.
2. When Obstinate Gargoyle dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. Hardened Academic triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on Obstinate Gargoyle.
4. Resolve the Goblin Bombardment ability.
5. Repeat.

This lethal loop transforms Goblin Bombardment into a persistent engine of destruction by exploiting the interplay between Persist and counters. When you sacrifice Obstinate Gargoyle to Goblin Bombardment, its persist ability normally brings it back with a detrimental -1/-1 counter; however, Hardened Academic's triggered ability steps in the moment the Gargoyle leaves the graveyard, instantly placing a neutralizing +1/+1 counter on it. State-based actions then cause the +1/+1 and -1/+1 counters to annihilate each other, leaving the Gargoyle pristine and ready to be sacrificed all over again.
