How it works

1. Activate Phyrexian Altar by sacrificing Lesser Masticore.
2. When Lesser Masticore dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield without a -1/-1 counter on it due to Melira.
3. Repeat.

While Phyrexian Altar stands ready to convert any creature into a steady stream of colored mana, Lesser Masticore is uniquely positioned to exploit it thanks to its persist ability. Normally, returning from the graveyard would saddle the Masticore with a debilitating -1/-1 counter that eventually shuts the loop down, but Melira's static prevention completely short-circuits that drawback. Because the counters can never be placed, the Masticore can die and return to the battlefield indefinitely, generating infinite sacrifices, death triggers, and mana to fuel whatever victory you desire.
