How it works

1. Activate Altar of Dementia by sacrificing Twilight Shepherd.
2. When Twilight Shepherd dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield without a -1/-1 counter on it due to Melira.
3. Resolve the Altar of Dementia ability
4. Repeat.

This clever loop relies on Melira, Sylvok Outcast and her passive ability to prevent creatures you control from receiving -1/-1 counters, which completely neutralizes the downside of Twilight Shepherd's persist ability. Because Twilight Shepherd returns to the battlefield cleanly every time it dies, you can repeatedly feed it to Altar of Dementia to sacrifice it and mill your opponents' libraries to dust. Furthermore, whenever Twilight Shepherd enters the battlefield, its triggered ability lets you return all cards put into your graveyard from the battlefield that turn back to your hand, giving you a recurring engine of value alongside your infinite mill.
