How it works

1. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Safehold Elite.
2. When Safehold Elite dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield without a -1/-1 counter on it due to Melira.
3. Repeat.

This ingenious loop turns a modest common into an infinite engine by leveraging Melira, Sylvok Outcast to completely nullify the drawback of persist. When you sacrifice Safehold Elite to Ashnod's Altar, its persist ability triggers to bring it back, but Melira's static ability prevents the usual -1/-1 counter from ever being placed on it. This means the creature can return endlessly, letting the Altar churn out infinite colorless mana alongside an infinite stream of sacrifice and death triggers.
