How it works

1. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Grazing Kelpie.
2. When Grazing Kelpie dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield without a -1/-1 counter on it due to Melira.
3. Repeat.

By pairing Ashnod's Altar with Grazing Kelpie, you establish a self-sustaining sacrifice loop that continually generates colorless mana while triggering an endless stream of death and entry triggers. The true engine of this setup, however, is Melira, Sylvok Outcast, whose passive ability prevents -1/-1 counters from being placed on your creatures entirely. Because Melira nullifies the usual drawback of Grazing Kelpie's persist ability, the Kelpie returns to the battlefield pristine every single time it dies, allowing you to feed it back into Ashnod's Altar indefinitely.
