How it works

1. Activate Bartolomé del Presidio by sacrificing Heartmender.
2. When Heartmender dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield without a -1/-1 counter on it due to Melira.
3. Resolve the Bartolomé del Presidio ability
4. Repeat.

This elegant loop relies on Melira, Sylvok Outcast to rewrite the rules of combat and counters, completely bypassing the drawback of the persist mechanic. When you use Bartolomé del Presidio to sacrifice Heartmender, its persist ability naturally tries to return it with a -1/-1 counter; however, Melira's static ability prevents those counters from ever being placed. Because Heartmender returns completely clean of any -1/-1 counters, it can be sacrificed over and over again to grow Bartolomé del Presidio infinitely larger while generating an endless storm of death, entry, and sacrifice triggers.
