How it works

1. Cast Phantasmal Image by paying its mana cost. Choose to have it enter the battlefield as a copy of Rakdos Joins Up.
2. Put Phantasmal Image into your graveyard due to the legend rule.
3. Phantasmal Image's first ability and second ability trigger, along with Rakdos Joins Up's second ability.
4. Resolve Phantasmal Image's second trigger and Rakdos Joins Up's trigger, dealing damage to target opponent.
5. Resolve Phantasmal Image's first trigger, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it as a copy of Rakdos Joins Up.
6. Repeat from step 2.

This clever loop turns the legend rule into a lethal engine by using Opalescence to give our enchantments life. When Phantasmal Image enters as a copy of Rakdos Joins Up, the resulting state-based action forces you to send one to the graveyard, which triggers the original Rakdos Joins Up to fling damage at your opponent. Crucially, that same trip to the graveyard allows Phantasmal Image's own enter-the-battlefield trigger to bring itself right back onto the battlefield with two additional +1/+1 counters, ready to copy the enchantment anew and repeat the cycle indefinitely.
