How it works

1. Activate Altar of Dementia by sacrificing Safehold Elite.
2. When Safehold Elite dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. Resolve the Altar of Dementia ability.
4. Activate Altar of Dementia by sacrificing Safehold Elite.
5. When Safehold Elite dies, its undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
6. Resolve the Altar of Dementia ability.
7. Repeat.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed provides the crucial static buff that grants all your non-Human creatures undying, ensuring Safehold Elite returns with a +1/+1 counter whenever it perishes. Because of state-based actions, that newly arrived +1/+1 counter immediately annihilates the -1/-1 counter left over from Safehold Elite's own persist ability, leaving the creature completely clean and ready to die again. By feeding this cycle into Altar of Dementia, you can endlessly sacrifice Safehold Elite to mill your opponents out completely while generating an infinite storm of death and entry triggers.
