How it works

1. Activate Shilgengar by sacrificing Safehold Elite.
2. When Safehold Elite dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. Resolve the Shilgengar ability.
4. Activate Shilgengar by sacrificing Safehold Elite.
5. When Safehold Elite dies, its undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
6. Resolve the Shilgengar ability.
7. Repeat.

This clever loop relies on the constant interplay between Safehold Elite’s persist ability and the undying granted by Mikaeus, the Unhallowed to recycle the same creature over and over. By feeding Safehold Elite to Shilgengar, Sire of Famine's sacrifice ability, you generate Blood tokens while alternately placing a -1/-1 counter and then a +1/+1 counter upon its repeated returns; because these counters naturally annihilate each other state-based action style, the Elite can indefinitely alternate between triggers. This engine endlessly repeats its cycle to flood the board with infinite artifacts, sacrifice triggers, and enter-the-battlefield events.
