How it works

  1. Cast Carnival of Souls by paying B mana.
  2. Herald of the Pantheon triggers, causing you to gain 1 life.
  3. When Carnival of Souls enters the battlefield as a creature due to Opalescence, it triggers, causing you to add B mana and lose 1 life.
  4. Activate Phyrexian Altar by sacrificing Carnival of Souls, adding one mana of any color.
  5. When Carnival of Souls dies, Enduring Renewal triggers, returning Carnival of Souls to your hand from your graveyard.
  6. Repeat.

This fascinating loop transforms a simple enchantment into a self-sustaining engine by turning the board state on its head with Opalescence, which breathes life into your non-Aura enchantments by making them creatures equal in power and toughness to their mana value. Once Carnival of Souls is a creature, every time it re-enters the battlefield it triggers itself, costing you a life to add black mana while also triggering Herald of the Pantheon to pad your life total and discount your enchantment costs. You then feed that living enchantment directly into Phyrexian Altar to generate any color of mana, sending Carnival of Souls to the graveyard. That death immediately awakens Enduring Renewal, whose passive replacement effects and graveyard triggers seamlessly bounce the fallen enchantment right back to your hand so you can cast it all over again.
