How it works

  1. Activate Altar of Dementia by sacrificing Greedy Freebooter.
  2. When Greedy Freebooter dies, it and Enduring Renewal trigger.
  3. Resolve the Greedy Freebooter trigger, causing you to scry 1 and create a Treasure token.
  4. Resolve the Enduring Renewal trigger, returning Greedy Freebooter from your graveyard to your hand.
  5. Resolve the Altar of Dementia ability, causing target player to mill cards equal to Greedy Freebooter's power.
  6. Activate the Treasure by tapping and sacrificing it, adding B mana.
  7. Cast Greedy Freebooter by paying B mana.
  8. Repeat.

This clever loop turns a humble 1-mana pirate into an unstoppable milling machine by exploiting a clever replacement effect. When you use Altar of Dementia to sacrifice Greedy Freebooter, Enduring Renewal swoops in to intercept the creature as it hits the graveyard, instantly returning it straight to your hand instead. Meanwhile, Greedy Freebooter's own death trigger rewards you with both a helpful scry and a Treasure token, which you can immediately crack to pay the mana cost needed to recast the creature. By playing with your hand revealed, Enduring Renewal also ensures your normal draws aren't accidentally disrupted while you continuously replay and sacrifice your looping threat to strip away your opponent's library.
