How it works

1. Cast the artifact by paying 0.
2. Toph, Hardheaded Teacher triggers, earthbending Guildless Commons.
3. Resolve the artifact spell.
4. Activate Altar of Dementia by sacrificing Guildless Commons.
5. When Guildless Commons dies, Toph, Hardheaded Teach triggers, returning Guildless Commons from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.
6. When Guildless Commons enters, it triggers, returning the artifact cast in step 1 from the battlefield to your hand, as it's a land due to Toph, the First Metalbender.
7. Resolve the Altar of Dementia ability
8. Repeat.

This clever loop turns your zero-mana artifact into an endlessly recycled engine by rewriting the rules of the battlefield. Thanks to Toph, the First Metalbender, that artifact is also treated as a land, allowing Guildless Commons to pick it right back up into your hand with its enters-the-battlefield trigger when the land drops. You then feed that same land to Altar of Dementia to mill your opponents out, and whenever it hits the graveyard, Toph, Hardheaded Teacher steps in to immediately bring Guildless Commons back to the battlefield tapped so the cycle can start all over again.
