How it works

1. Cast the artifact by paying 0.
2. Toph, Hardheaded Teacher triggers, earthbending Guildless Commons.
3. Resolve the artifact spell.
4. Activate Trenching Steed by sacrificing Guildless Commons.
5. When Guildless Commons dies, Toph, Hardheaded Teach triggers, returning Guildless Commons from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.
6. When Guildless Commons enters, it triggers, returning the artifact cast in step 1 from the battlefield to your hand, as it's a land due to Toph, the First Metalbender.
7. Resolve the Trenching Steed ability
8. Repeat.

This ingenious loop transforms your cheap artifacts into a self-sustaining engine by letting Toph, the First Metalbender redefine all your nontoken artifacts as lands. Once they are lands, Guildless Commons can use its entry trigger to scoop them right back to your hand whenever it enters the battlefield. You then sacrifice Guildless Commons to Trenching Steed to fuel the loop, only for Toph, Hardheaded Teacher to gracefully slide it back from the graveyard to the battlefield each time it dies. Cast your free artifacts to trigger Toph, Hardheaded Teacher along the way, generating an endless cascade of triggers that can overwhelm your opponents in formats like Commander and Legacy.
