How it works
- Cast Burnt Offering by paying and sacrificing Scholar of the Ages, adding seven mana in any combination of and/or .
- Cast Dread Return by paying 2, returning Scholar of the Ages from your graveyard to the battlefield.
- Scholar of the Ages triggers, returning Burnt Offering and Dread Return from your graveyard to your hand.
- Repeat.
This clever loop relies on sacrificing and recurring Scholar of the Ages to continuously harvest mana and spells. By feeding the Scholar to Burnt Offering, you generate a massive influx of black and red mana based on its mana value, which in turn easily pays for the casting cost of Dread Return. When Dread Return targets the Scholar of the Ages in your graveyard, its enter-the-battlefield trigger neatly scoops both Burnt Offering and Dread Return right back to your hand, setting the stage to repeat the entire cycle endlessly.
