How it works

1. Activate Carrion Feeder by sacrificing Cauldron Familiar, putting a +1/+1 counter on Carrion Feeder.
2. Activate Cauldron Familiar by sacrificing a Food, returning Cauldron Familiar to the battlefield from your graveyard.
3. Cauldron Familiar and Insidious Roots trigger.
4. Resolve the Insidious Roots trigger, creating a 0/1 green Plant creature token and a Food artifact token, and then putting a +1/+1 counter on each Plant you control.
5. Resolve the Cauldron Familiar trigger, causing each opponent to lose 1 life and you to gain 1 life.
6. Repeat

This elegant loop turns a hungry cat into a self-sustaining engine of life loss and growth, legal across Commander, Legacy, Modern, Oathbreaker, and Vintage. You begin by feeding Cauldron Familiar to Carrion Feeder, sending the cat to the graveyard where its ability lets it jump right back to the battlefield by sacrificing a Food. That journey of the cat leaving your graveyard triggers Insidious Roots, which rewards you with a growing Plant token while Peregrin Took steps in to sweeten the deal by turning that token creation into *both* the Plant and an extra Food. Finally, Cauldron Familiar's own entrance drains your opponents while feeding your life total, leaving you with enough resources to tap your mana-producing Plants or convert your extra Foods into card draw whenever you wish.
