How it works

1. Cast the artifact by paying 0.
2. Toph, Hardheaded Teacher triggers, earthbending Selesnya Sanctuary.
3. Resolve the artifact spell.
4. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Selesnya Sanctuary.
5. When Selesnya Sanctuary dies, Toph, Hardheaded Teach triggers, returning Selesnya Sanctuary from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.
6. When Selesnya Sanctuary enters, it triggers, returning the artifact cast in step 1 from the battlefield to your hand, as it's a land due to Toph, the First Metalbender.
7. Repeat.

This ingenious loop turns your cheap artifacts into reusable lands with the help of Toph, the First Metalbender, whose static ability makes all your nontoken artifacts function as lands. By leveraging Toph, Hardheaded Teacher to trigger earthbending whenever you cast a spell, you can turn Selesnya Sanctuary into a creature just in time to feed it to Ashnod's Altar for mana. Because Selesnya Sanctuary's own enter-the-battlefield trigger bounces a land, it scoops up the artifact you just cast—thanks to Toph, the First Metalbender's continuous type-changing effect—allowing you to recast it indefinitely and generate boundless resources.
