How it works

  1. Cast Acererak either from your hand or from the command zone by paying B mana plus commander tax, if applicable.
  2. Aetherflux Reservoir triggers, causing you to gain life.
  3. When Acererak enters, its first ability and Carnival of Souls trigger.
  4. Resolve the Carnival of Souls trigger, causing you to add B mana and lose 1 life.
  5. Resolve the Acererak trigger, returning it from the battlefield to your hand, and venturing into Lost Mine of Phandelver.
  6. Repeat.

This ingenious loop turns Acererak the Archlich's self-bouncing trigger into a closed-circuit engine for endless dungeon exploration. Because Planar Gate reduces Acererak's casting cost down to a single black mana, Carnival of Souls can fully refund that mana every time the Lich enters the battlefield, neatly offsetting its life-loss drawback. Meanwhile, Aetherflux Reservoir watches the endless procession of spells and rewards your persistent casting with a mountain of life, which you can immediately channel into a lethal 50-damage blast to close out the game.
