How it works

1. Activate Tortured Existence by paying and discarding a creature card, returning any other creature card from your graveyard to your hand.
2. Insidious Roots triggers, creating a 0/1 Plant creature token, then putting a +1/+1 counter on each Plant you control.
3. Activate the Plant by tapping it, adding .
4. Repeat.

This clever engine turns graveyard recycling into an ever-growing botanical army by exploiting the passive triggers of Insidious Roots whenever a creature leaves your graveyard. Each time you feed a card into Tortured Existence, the Roots react by spawning a 0/1 Plant token and pumping up your existing foliage with +1/+1 counters. Because these fresh sprouts immediately gain the ability to tap for mana, they fund the black mana requirement of Tortured Existence, making the loop entirely self-sustaining. While the combo doesn't strictly require Maelstrom Wanderer to function, having the legendary elemental in your deck gives your newly minted creatures haste the moment they hit the battlefield, letting you immediately leverage the infinite creature entry triggers and massive stats you've generated.
