How it works

  1. Activate Woe Strider by sacrificing Vengeful Vampire
  2. When Vengeful Vampire dies, its undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
  3. Activate Woe Strider by sacrificing Vengeful Vampire
  4. When Vengeful Vampire dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
  5. Resolve both Woe Strider abilities from step 1 and 3.
  6. Repeat.

This clever loop relies on the transforming front face of Eirdu, Carrier of Dawn // Isilu, Carrier of Twilight to grant persist to Vengeful Vampire, which already naturally possesses undying. When you sacrifice Vengeful Vampire to Woe Strider's sacrifice ability, its undying ability returns it to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter; sacrificing it again lets its newly granted persist ability return it with a -1/-1 counter, which immediately annihilates the existing +1/+1 counter as state-based actions. This alternating cycle of counters lets you endlessly repeat the process, fueling endless sacrifices while Woe Strider lets you continuously scry through your deck.
